Itinerary
Set on a journey of about 3 hours, covering across 110 kilometers after reaching the Guwahati airport. Get transferred from Guwahati airport or railway station to Shillong, with a delightful stopover at Umium Lake. Shillong, the inaugural capital of Meghalaya, is nestled in rolling hills adorned with pine trees, offering a more temperate climate compared to tropical India. Situated at an elevation of 1496 meters above sea level, the city is currently home to approximately 270,000 residents. With numerous cascading waterfalls, Shillong is affectionately known as the "Scotland of the East," where traces of British influence are still evident in the city's architecture and culinary traditions.
You will spend the night in Shillong, immersing yourself in its unique charm.
Commence your day with a delightful breakfast at the hotel, followed by a captivating full-day exploration of Shillong.
Shillong, often referred to as the 'Gleneagle of the East,' is situated at the heart of a plateau, encircled by the picturesque Khasi hills. This stunning city boasts an array of must-visit tourist attractions. Ward's Lake, a local gem, is renowned for leisurely garden strolls and boating.
The Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, a seven-story marvel, seamlessly combines a museum with a research and publication center, dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of North East India, showcasing the diverse traditions of the sister states under one roof.
Lady Hydari Park, designed in a Japanese style, is a landscaped oasis adorned with stretches of roses and exquisite flowers. Adjacent to the park, you'll find a mini zoo housing approximately 73 bird species, 140 reptiles, and various mammals.
Shillong also boasts one of Asia's largest Golf courses, an 18-hole masterpiece charted amidst a valley filled with dense pine groves and rhododendron trees, providing a serene setting for an evening of leisure.
The State Museum offers a fascinating insight into the lifestyle and heritage of the people of Meghalaya. Moreover, Shillong and its surroundings are adorned with magnificent waterfalls that cascade down deep valleys, creating misty spectacles that punctuate the serenity of the environment. Among these, Elephant Falls stands out, with a mountain stream gushing down two successive falls nestled in dells of fern-covered rocks.
You will spend a comfortable night at the hotel, reflecting on the day's discoveries and experiences in Shillong.
Relish a hearty breakfast at the hotel and then set off to Cherrapunji via road. Cherrapunji, situated in Meghalaya, holds the distinction of being one of the rainiest places on Earth, receiving continuous rainfall throughout the year. This town, nestled in the East Khasi Hills about 50 kilometers southwest of the state's capital, Shillong, is also known as Sohra or Churra, which translates to 'the land of oranges.' Moreover, the cliffs of Cherrapunji offer breathtaking vistas of the plains of Bangladesh.
During your visit to Cherrapunji, you'll explore captivating attractions such as Arwah Cave, Nahkhalikai Falls, Mwasmai Cave, Seven Sister Falls, Dainthlen Waterfalls, Eco Park, and Wei Sawdong Waterfalls, immersing yourself in the natural beauty and wonders of the region.
You will spend the night in Cherrapunji, cherishing the unique experiences this extraordinary place has to offer.
Following breakfast, embark on a picturesque drive from Cherrapunjee to Guwahati.
In the afternoon, pay a visit to the Kamakhya temple - a sacred shrine dedicated to goddess Kamakhya, believed to be an incarnation of Sati. Perched on Nilachal hill, according to the Shiva Purana, it was here that the yoni or creative organ of Sati fell. This event occurred when Vishnu, in an effort to save the world from Shiva's destructive tandavanrittya or dance of destruction, used his Shudarshan Chakra to dismember Sati's lifeless body into 51 pieces.
Relax and unwind at the hotel and rejuvenate for the day that is yet to come.
Begin the day with a delicious morning meal and then set out on your homebound journey; get on time transfer to the airport/railway station for onward connection.
