Gulf Air Shifts to Weight-based System of Baggage Allowance

Gulf Airlines of Bahrain has made a shift from the piece-based system of baggage allowance to the weight-based system for check-in baggage. This change in check-in baggage allowance will become effective from 27th October, 2024 and all tickets booked on and from this date will feature the new system. The air tickets issued prior to this date will continue to have the old, piece-based system of baggage allowance. Additional allowances for students and frequent flyers are also to be referenced on the basis of weight. Excess baggage charges are also to be in terms of weight per kg or slab of weight.

Understanding Piece and Weight Based Systems of Allowance

In the piece-based system, the allowance is generally in terms of carrying 1 check in bag of 23 kg which is a worldwide standard and the size is generally at 158 cm linear dimensions. This system is generally applied on routes involving USA and Canada by the airline companies. If a person is to take more baggage, the prices are for 23 kg bags, not on per kg of weight.

In the weight-based system, the allowance is in terms of the kilograms or pounds of baggage allowed. Whether this is to be taken in 1 bag or multiple bags, the airline is open to deciding on it.  Extra baggage is to be bought on per kilogram or pound of baggage.

Irrespective of the system of baggage applicable, there is a global acceptance that maximum weight of a check-in bag shall not be more than 32 kg.

Example: Delhi to Dubai Gulf Air Flight

We understand it with an example. So, from 27th October, 2024, for the Delhi to Dubai flights on Gulf Air the new allowance for economy class tickets will be 35 kg for Lite fares and 40 kgs for Smart and Flex fare classes. The FalconFlyer Members are also allowed free extra allowance in terms of weight. Silver members are allowed 10 kg, Gold members 15 kg and Black members are allowed 25 kg in addition to their free allowances. Earlier these allowances were in terms of number of pieces of 23 kg.

Infant and Student Allowance

Under the new allowance, the infants are allowed 15 kg free check in baggage allowance and students are allowed extra 10 kg free.
